Semilla / Seed #24: Leah Penniman (Soul Fire Farm)

While Black: Soul Fire Farm’s Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land.

Through living and studying in the Garifuna villages of Iriona, Honduras, my awareness around land rights and farming practices was raised. When I returned to the US, I was eager to continue learning. Through programs at Soul Fire Farm, I have been able to participate in farming intensives and discussions of collective land ownership in the northeastern part of the US. The farm advances racial justice in the food system, and has developed an extended community of activists and farmers committed to such work. Leah Penniman (pictured above) is one of Soul Fire’s founding farmers, and has recently completed her first manuscript, Farming While Black: Soul Fire Farm’s Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land. By cultivating awareness about injustice in the food system and building transnational networks of resistance to oppressive structures, Soul Fire is supporting my work with members of the cassava cooperatives who are being pushed off their lands. Please support this ongoing transnational solidarity work with a contribution today. [Fundraiser has ended.]
