Roland L. Freeman is my godfather and mentor. It is through his images that I first came to visualize the connections between Black diasporic folk cultures. An award-winning photographer, Freeman’s images bring to life the memories of connections past. He is the person who encouraged me to take my camera to the field during research in Honduras. Without his encouragement, I would not have the photographs that constitute the Ereba Iriona book. I am part of his legacy, which intends to document Black folk culture around the globe in ways that embody the dignity of the people photographed.
